The Music Garden

Livestreams  (2020)

With the support of the City of Hobart, we streamed live music into hundreds of lounge rooms on Saturday nights between July and October.  

​

Over 8 sessions the Music Garden Live Online series created paid employment opportunities for 53 musicians, employed 6 technical production staff, welcomed 173 COVID-safe live audience members and reached over 21,800 online audience members across the globe!

Rheeba Von Diamond

She loves to party! Her band of fabulous Jazz players make hot tunes with old favourites.  Gymnastic lead breaks, shiny threads and high energy tunes put fun at the centre of their improv. Never the same show twice.

The Modern Operative 

Modern operative was formed in the winter of 2006 with the aim of revisiting the sound of the big small band. 

Having taken many configurations and reinventions, the ensemble make the effort to recreate the sounds of the swing era, including be-bop, sounds of the west coast cool scene, through to the modern sounds of today.

Members of the band are actively including their own compositions and arrangements to add to the Modern Operative book, so as to widen the stylistic scope of the group and to find ways to make this ensemble as relevant as possible.

Jay Jarome and the Missing Links 

Jay Jarome and the Missing Links bring a hard grooving blend of Soul, Pop, Funk, and Blues. Since making the move to Hobart from Bribie Island, Queensland, Jay has swiftly become known throughout Tasmania for his angelic vocal ability and transcendent jam sessions.

Harry Edwards Quartet

The Harry Edwards Quartet perform all-original instrumental compositions combining inspiration from gypsy jazz, film scores, modern jazz, and classical music.

The group features Charlie McCarthy on violin, Isaac Gee on double bass, Felicity Lovett on rhythm guitar, and Harry Edwards on lead guitar

 

Kudu Joy

Kudu Joy is a young alt-pop band fronted by vocalist and trumpet player Sabine Bester. From a young age Sabine toured around Australia playing with her family band playing traditional Balkan music from Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece.  She grew up immersed in world music, at festivals like Woodford Folk Festival and the National Folk Festival, knowing her path would always be music. 

Sabine found an amazing group of musicians to help express her songs. Jay Jarome (keys, vocals), Thomas Hann
(guitar, vocals), Sasha Gavlek (bass, vocals), and Lewis Elliot (drums) are the big four who put the joy in Kudu Joy.

The end result of all these insanely skilled young musos getting together is gritty, dramatic pop with jazz/soul trimmings.

 

The D.K. Effect

The DK Effect are an 8-piece original funk, soul and gospel-infused RnB band from Australia’s deep south (Tasmania). 

The group’s powerful yet exquisite vocal and focal trinity (Crystal Campbell, Ruby Austin-Lund and Belle Richardson) are a veritable tour-de-force, and Randal Muir (keys), Aleks Folvig (guitar and vocals), Al Tolond (drums), David Johnstone (bass) and Jed Adams (sax) deliver grooves as deep as a freshly pressed 45.

While the DK Effect’s material focuses on storytelling, melody and harmony, it is also saturated with the passion and polyrhythmic ‘call and response’ vocal synchronicity of gospel music. A selection of the band’s repertoire has been captured on their debut recording and reflects their organic and authentic, early funk and soul sound.

 

CELESTE

CELESTE is a singer/songwriter from Tasmania, honing an original sound that borrows from folk, roots and alt-rock, yet strays into realms of a genre undefinable. An earth-spun songstress with provoking lyrics, emotive melodies with a focus on the alchemy of turning experiences and feelings into song.

 

Christopher Coleman and the Songwriters 

Acclaimed singer-songwriter and Tassie darling  Christopher Coleman was joined by a stellar line up of professional musicians for this final livestream event of 2020. Additionally, 6 incredibly talented emerging songwriters showcased their music, which they developed with the help of Christopher during our 2020 mentorship program.
